Professor Ludwig Faddeev is widely known for his contributions to mathematics and theoretical physics, which have reshaped modern mathematical physics. His work on quantum field theory (QFT) has prepared the ground for the gauge field theory revolution of the 1970s. His contributions to the many body problem in quantum mechanics and to the inverse scattering problem are among the deepest achievements in this area. His pioneering work on the quantum inverse scattering method (QISM) started a wide new field of research, ranging from solvable models in quantum fi eld theory to quantum groups.
